Cecropia moth
I photographed this beautiful moth hanging upside down as you can see, on one of the outer islands in Georgian Bay's 30,000 islands. It was quite large - having about a four inch (9 cm?) wingspan and had obviously arrived overnight. It is one of the Giant Silkworm moths, two others I've seen being Polyphemus and Luna moths... all beautiful and startling because of their size and the intricasy of design and colour. Its Latin name is Hyalophora cecropia. It is found only in North America apparently. Aren't we lucky?
