A walrus in soapstone

A week or so ago I posted some photographs of Inuit sculptures of birds.

This walrus has been sitting waiting for his turn.

Again the detail on this beautiful little carving of about four inches long, is amazing. It sits on part of a caribou antler and again was created by one of the many native artists in Igloolik.

The temperature up there today with the wind chill is -59 C by the way... and they've had a bit more than two and a half hours of sun. A different world for many of us to imagine. Not one that is very hospitable to a whole lot.

Hope you enjoy seeing this beautiful art work - and trust that you have a great day.

  2. I love this Inuit carvings! There is a great deal of personality in this item. Don't you love the cold. Contrasts make us appreciate the opposite.
